“The Dude abides.”

The plot of this Raymond Chandler-esque comedy crime caper from the Coen Brothers (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen) pivots around a case of mistaken identity complicated by extortion, double-crosses, deception, embezzlement, sex, pot, and gallons of White Russians (made with fresh cream, please).

In 1991, unemployed ’60s refugee Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) grooves into his laid-back Los Angeles lifestyle. One of the laziest men in LA, he enjoys hanging with his bowling buddies, pompous security-store owner Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and mild-mannered ex-surfer Donny (Steve Buscemi). However, the Dude’s life takes an alternate route the afternoon two goons break into his threadbare Venice, California, bungalow, rough him up, and urinate on his living room rug. Why? Because Jackie Treehorn (Ben Gazzara) is owed money by the wife of a certain Jeff Lebowski. However, the goons grabbed the wrong Jeff Lebowski. With the right info, they would have invaded the home of philanthropic Pasadena millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston). The Dude looks up his wealthy namesake, manages to get a replacement for his rug, and meets the millionaire’s sexy young wife Bunny (Tara Reid). Later, Jeffrey (“The Big”) Lebowski calls in the Dude to deliver a $1 million ransom for the return of his kidnapped wife … As events unravel, the Dude gets caught up in the schemes of Lebowski’s daughter, erotic artist Maude (Julianne Moore), encounters both cops and bad guys, and drifts through an elaborate bowling fantasy sequence titled Gutterballs. The soundtrack includes Bob Dylan, Yma Sumac, Moondog, Captain Beefheart, and the Sons of the Pioneers. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi.

    SLUMBERJACK

Bass-heavy and bombastic, frenetic yet lush, the music of Slumberjack is born from its Perth-based creators’ passion for contrast. Made up of DJ/producers Morgan Then (a 23-year-old Borneo-bred classically trained pianist and former world-music artist) and Fletcher Ehlers (a 21-year-old Australia native who taught himself to make electronic music at age 11), the duo dig into their disparate backgrounds to push into thrillingly original sonic territory. On their debut EP Slumberjack (Onelove), that dynamic reveals itself in lead single “Body Cry” (a melody-driven EDM-meets-R&B fusion included in the weekly “Skrillex Selects” SoundCloud playlist series last year) and its follow-up “Horus” (a heavy-hitting and hypnotic Eastern-flavored track that climbed to #1 on Hype Machine). With the EP hitting #2 on the iTunes electronic chart soon after its November 2014 release, Slumberjack are emerging as one of the most exciting and daringly creative acts within Australia’s electronic music scene. ~ Wonderland Warehouse Project.

From tiny, yet overconfident and suave saxophonists, to heavenly voiced bashful soloists, anybody can dream, after all, all creatures great and small are welcome to the Moon Theatre. The United States space program reports that its missing, overdue manned Mars probe has returned to Earth orbit, but that they haven’t been able to make radio contact with it. When it is brought down by remote control, they find three of the four crewmembers aboard: one of them, Professor Gettell (Les Tremayne), is dead; another, mission commander Colonel Tom O’Bannion (Gerald Mohr), is in a coma and suffering from some kind of alien infection; and the third, exo-biologist Iris Ryan (Nora Hayden), is in a state of shock. The ship’s tape library seems to have been wiped clean of any record of what took place on the mission, and the doctors can’t begin to save O’Bannion until they know what happened. In desperation, they decide to put Iris Ryan into a state of hypnosis, forcing her to recall the events of the mission.

One of a relative handful of 1950s sci-fi films done in color, The Angry Red Planet did its rivals one better with the use of a special effects process called “Cinemagic,” which gave the entire screen a deep red tint but also created the illusion of dimensionality (i.e. 3-D, sort of), and made the monsters look particularly eerie. The mixture of better-than-usual special effects, coupled with more than competent acting (Mohr, Tremayne, and Kruschen were veterans of mainstream films and television) helps make this one of the more entertaining space-flight stories of its period. Rottentomatoes.
