Saturday, May 4th Doors at 9pm Happy hour prices on food and beverage until 10 PM. 21 & Over. $20 MALA Speak to anyone with an interest in dubstep about their favourite producers, and it’s likely that work of Mark Lawrence, AKA Mala, will eventually get mentioned. It wasn’t always this way. As with most of the other producers sculpting the sound in its early years, his story begins in the London borough of Croydon, where he visited the now defunct Big Apple record shop to get his musical fix and get the lowdown on developments from scene godfather and store clerk DJ Hatcha. His passion was a full-time gig. Lawrence was employed as a youth worker, getting kids into music production by day, and burning the candle in his own studio by night, cranking out the tunes that were to announce his presence on the scene in a big way throughout 2004. Following on from the first Digital Mystikz release via Big Apple’s in-house label, Mala, Coki and Loefah launched their DMZ record label. As the label progressed, the trio started to develop their own distinct sounds—Loefah with his minimalist halfstep, Coki’s wild mid-range oscillations and Mala’s deeper, dread-infused[...]

Bubba Ho-Tep Based on the Bram Stoker Award nominee short story by cult author Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-tep tells the “true” story of what really did become of Elvis Presley. We find Elvis (Bruce Campbell) as an elderly resident in an East Texas rest home, who switched identities with an Elvis impersonator years before his “death”, then missed his chance to switch back. Elvis teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow nursing home resident who thinks that he is actually President John F. Kennedy, and the two valiant old codgers sally forth to battle an evil Egyptian entity who has chosen their long-term care facility as his happy hunting grounds. Communities Against Abuse of Prescription Drugs, a committee of Humboldt Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention, is providing a community screening of the documentary Written Off. This event will raise awareness of the realities and dangers of opioid misuse. We aim to reduce the stigma surrounding drug use by encouraging families to be open and talk to each other and their health care providers about their struggles. Matt Edwards grew up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where the winters are long, they call the mosquito the state bird, and his hometown was so small that it didn’t have a single store. His first high came from pills prescribed by a doctor for a botched toe surgery. For ten years he sweat out shift after shift in restaurant kitchens, working twice as many hours as anyone else so he could pay rent and feed his addiction.mMatt was driven by a desperate need to get a fix – more often to avoid withdrawal than to get “high” in a recreational sense. To get what he needed he spun a web of fiction. He was a magnificent liar – smart, creative,[...]

To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
Friday, May 31st Doors at 7:30 PM. Movie at 8:00 PM. 109 min. Rated PG-13 $5. “After jointly winning a local drag queen pageant in New York City, Noxeema Jackson and Vida Boheme win the right and are given the round trip airfare to compete in the Drag Queen of America pageant in Hollywood, California. Noxeema sees herself as the next Dorothy Dandridge, who bucked the trend of most black American movie actresses of her time by never playing the slave house maid. Vida’s style reflects her past of growing up in upper class suburban Pennsylvania. One of their fellow New York City contestants, Chi-Chi Rodriguez, is a straight-talking, but naive and inexperienced drag queen. Seeing that Chi-Chi needs some drag queen confidence (despite her bravada), Vida and a reluctant Noxeema decide to cash in their plane tickets and buy an older model Cadillac convertible and drive to Hollywood with Chi-Chi. Their drive takes them through much of the country where alternate lifestyles are less tolerated than they may be in New York City or Los Angeles. The three have an extended stay in small town Snydersville, where their car breaks down. If they ever make it out of Snydersville,[...]
