In a review of at the time of its release, The Hollywood Reporter said the film was an “outrageous onslaught upon the feelings, the senses, the brains and the stomachs of an audience.” So, celebrate Valentine’s Day early with Todd Browning’s Freaks (1932)! Profiling people whose identities have been subsumed under the label of “carnival attractions,” Freaks depicts their lives with surprising nuance and tenderness. As The New Yorker also noted, “It’s a chilling notion to imagine these weird beings, with their own lives and vanities and passions, all allied in a bitter enmity against us.”
